Silicon Lubricant Spray: The Secret to Quieter Doors, Windows and Hinges

Stiff window sills, squeaky doors or loud hinges may not seem like a big deal in the house, but frequent rubbing and rattling can make it more difficult to move around. Dust, moisture, dryness and regular use can cause moving surfaces to lose their smoothness over time. By using an appropriate lubricant, friction can be minimized and these components can more easily move. Silicon lubricant spray can be helpful for some domestic and auto maintenance uses.

Silicone-based lubricants can coat the parts with a thin layer of lubrication, but they do not necessarily leave the same sticky coating that heavy oils or greases leave on the parts.

Doors and hinges get noisy, why?

Doors and hinges open and close many times a day. The existing lubrication can slowly deteriorate due to rubbing forces between the various surfaces. Dust and dirt also can collect around the moving parts.

If the surfaces become dry friction will start to increase and cause squeaking or resistance. Doors can take on an annoying sound that occurs every time it opens or closes, and hinges can become less mobile.

The use of a suitable silicon lubricant spray can help to minimize this friction by forming a lubricating layer between compatible surfaces.

It is used on Door Hinges.

Clean visible dirt off hinge area prior to applying lubricant. Don’t just drench the hinge, spray a little on the moving part.

Lubricate the door by moving it back and forth a few times. Rub off excess product to minimize the possibility of picking up unwanted dirt.

In case of continued squeaking, there might be some other issues like excessive wear and tear, misalignment, or even damage in the hinge. Such mechanical faults may not be sorted out using lubrication.

Making Windows easier to use and less troublesome

Dirty or dry tracks will make it difficult for sliding windows to slide. A silicone lubricant may be appropriate for some rubber seals and compatible sliding parts if recommended by the manufacturer and per the materials used.

Always determine if the product is suitable for the material and window mechanism before using it. Do not spray in areas with electrical components or parts that are sensitive to wet  conditions.

The areas in which Silicone Lubrication is appropriate

The benefit of silicone lubrication is that in some cases when petroleum based lubricants are not preferred, silicone is used for rubber and plastic parts. May be beneficial for seals, guides and moving parts which should be compatible and have lower friction.

It shouldn’t be used in every application as a lubricant, though. Heavy-load mechanical parts or other specialised parts such as metal gears, may need other products.

This is The Simple Maintenance Habit.

Periodic checks may be helpful in detecting trouble before it’s more obvious. When a door begins to squeak or a window begins to become difficult to open, inspect the moving surface for dirt, dryness or signs of wear.

Apply with silicon lubricant spray sparingly and only on surfaces suitable for the lubricant. Clean up first, monitor the movement and apply a controlled quantity thereafter.

The aim is not to cover a component with lubricant but to lubricate the component sufficiently to minimise unneeded friction.

Maintain Effective Movement Routines

It’s not always difficult to fix windows that squeak or rattle. For appropriate applications, the proper silicone lubricant may be used to restore smooth movement and eliminate any annoying squeaks.

When lubrication alone is not adequate, it is important to select the right lubricant for the material and mechanism and to apply it correctly and correct underlying mechanical problems. Silicon lubricant spray can be a simple solution to help keep compatible doors, windows, seals and hinges running smoothly, as part of regular maintenance.
